Determining Mixed Building Functions

In order to discover my design, I combine the three different approaches which I done before (Future Scenario, Site Context, and Site State Condition). With the whole diagram combined, I find a significant need of cultural education centre. Furthermore, the building must become a bridge to overcome the future worst scenario, also enhance the identity of Woodford, and become one with the site physical condition.

To begin with, I will explain the relation between the function of the building and the worst future scenario. Since the building aim is to achieve survival of humanity (by teaching present people about the importance of multi culture and self sufficient in order for them to stand together and overcome the worst future scenario)., Furthermore, this concept represent a bridge which will prepare the present future for getting through the worst scenario of the future to a self sufficient world. In order to teach them about the multi culture and self sufficient, a museum is needed. Since the main aim is to introduce the culture to the people so it is much better showing them live culture then historical figures. Therefore, I decide to create a living museum.

Furthermore, the cultural education centre will also strengthen the identity of Woodford rather than change it. Furthermore, the building will serve as an activity centre and will encourage people to camp in Woodford not only while the festival take place. Furthermore, the cultural education centre will also equip with a theatre which will introduce the event which will occur during the Woodford Festival. In other words, the building acts as a miniature of the Woodford festival. Therefore, it will signify a gate which will become a transition of the camping area and the festival ground.

Moreover, the building will also act as a sculptural element of the site which will become an icon of the Woodford. I want the building to leave an experience which will be memorable every time people come to the Woodford.

Based on all of the function relation, it is clear that the cultural education centre needed. Furthermore, the cultural education centre needs to consist of living museum, theatre, and public space which will become an icon of the Woodford.

Site Analysis

The festival ground is surrounded by camping areas. Therefore, the building will not only become the transition area but also a gate that connecting the camping area to the festival ground. To complete this concept, I need to search for a spot that have direct access from the camping area to the festival ground. Furthermore, I found the most interesting spot on the site which is the performer camping area.

The figures above show the location of my chosen spot. It has a one way access to the site and the access road is flanks by two hills as the figure below.

As the figure above, it reflects my concept about the gate which becomes a transition point from the camping area to the festival ground. Furthermore, the view also strengthen my idea which creating the site as the shifting point of the nature and festival ground.

To conclude, my site investigation gives me strong points which relate the basic concept from context of the site to the actual state of the site, which are transition, vocal point, gate shape, and shifting point.

Design Concept Development Based on the Site

Continuing the development of the concept, I try to create a building that will become a transition point between festival area and camping area. This building will enhance both elements of the site and also becomes the icon of the site.

Furthermore, by relating all of the elements on the site, I find out that all elements of the annual festival and camping area related with each other. By combining all of these elements, I find three factor main factors that will influence my function resolution which are education, culture, and sustainability.

Site Context

To begin with, I try to research the reason of people going to Woodford. Based on the research, I found that there are 2 main reasons people going to Woodford. First is the Woodford annual festival, and second is the camping area at Woodford.

First I try to research the Woodford annual festival. Based on some articles that I read about Woodford, the festival is all about introducing different cultures all around Australia and teaching people to appreciate nature. The culture that is shown here is related to their culinary and traditional music.

Furthermore, the camping area in Woodford is also becoming popular because of the natural environment which still well preserved. Since this place is so natural, it helps people to relieve their stress and forget their job for a while. They also leave their modern life for a while and try to live naturally. However, I also find that most of people only camp here during the Woodford annual festival.

After researching both main reasons, I find that these reasons become the attraction point of Woodford. Therefore, I conclude that these are the identity of Woodford. Seeing this identity is positive and related with my concept, I decide to fortify the identity and enhance it by making people interested to camp here not only on the annual festival but also every other month. In order to achieve this, I need to create an activity centre which will provide and become an attraction centre of the site. However, I do not want to change the identity of Woodford. Therefore, this becomes my consideration in deciding the next phase of my design.

Achieving Self Sufficient Community

In order to achieve the self sufficient community as the scenario describe, a mutual understanding need to be achieved. People need to acknowledge each other cultures and understand that they are the same human being that needs each other in order to survive. However, it cannot be accomplished by only understand each other. People still need to realize that they need education in order to fulfill their own needs.

Therefore, people in the present need an education centre which will educate them about the culture and ways of self sufficiency. The idea is to introduce people about the importance of their survival in the future and the possibilities of worst future scenario. Therefore, there is a need of culture centre. Furthermore, this building will provide them all the things which they need to know in order to overcome the worst possible scenario. And eventually will become a bridge which will connect the present to the future.

The Future Scenario Highlight

Based on the “future scenario” exploration, I try highlighting the event as shown in the diagram. Because of the disaster which will occur in the future (war or natural disaster), the government system in all country will fail and causing there are no clear borders for all countries in the world. Furthermore, this event will trigger the merge of all cultures in the world. There will be no culture differences and people will acknowledge and understand each other. Since there are no government systems, the world will be in state of chaos and people who live near each other will group themselves and create a new community in order to survive. This is where the community start developing into a self sufficient community. After a small self sufficient community stabilize themselves, they will merge with other self sufficient community in order to create a bigger self sufficient community. This process will keep on continuing until the world stabilizes and self sufficient world created.

Individual Project One Statement

To begin with, I am working in the group 5 for architecture fiction project. The members of this group are me (Alvin Tanzil), Thomas Langton, Arabella Lapitan, and Dwina Marcella Sugianto Lie.

Discussion
In my opinion, my group is very critical when discussing an issue. Each member gives their own opinion while hears other member idea. Every discussion that I have with this group is always giving me new fresh ideas, and new issues to discuss in our next meeting. Since me & Dwina are from Indonesia and Thomas & Arabella are from Australia, We always have our opinion base on our culture, therefore every discussion always has interesting argument and idea that occur.

Communication
In term of communication, everyone is very easy to reach. We usually communicate through mobile phone, email, and video call. However, my group prefer to meet in person and discuss the project together than discussing it virtually. In our opinion, it is more effective to meet and do the work together rather than making it individually (if we struggle with an issue, it is better to discuss it in group than thinking it alone).

Cooperation
While doing this project, my group always prepare an issue before we meet. This helps my group discussion and helps the development of the project. After each meeting, we always have homework for everyone (we divide the workload evenly). Furthermore, every member of the group will do the research in home and back with issues that we will discuss in the next meeting.

Contribution
Every member is good with research and reasoning of problems that occur during the process. Furthermore, the workload in my group distributes evenly so everyone will be busy by their own homework. However, every member of the group has their own skill that they are very good at and not good at. We try to understand each other problem and make up each other flaw. Therefore, we can cooperate smoothly and manage to finish the project early.

Overall, I am very satisfied with my group coordination and enjoy every process that we have been through in order to finish the first project. Thank you everyone.
